      <link>http://www.thepress.co.uk/whatson/music/3860982.Review__Uriah_Heep__The_Duchess__York/</link>
      <description>
  Uriah Heep started out about 40 years ago as a very ’eavy rock band, before heading off in a keyboard swirl to a land of demons and wizards and exiting through the back door into virtual oblivion.

      <description>
  KATE Rusby’s sad songs and bubbly Yorkshire chat have become such a winner that Sunday’s sell-out was no surprise, and nor was the content of her two sets.

  MARTYN JOSEPH is a force of nature who puts his heart and soul into every song he sings, whether it be a tender love song or a raucous rocker.

  ALL the talk ahead of time was of the “amphitheatre”, a Roman Colosseum-style set designed to house five different operas.

      <title>Review: London Sinfonietta, Sir Jack Lyons Concert Hall, University of York</title>
      <link>http://www.thepress.co.uk/whatson/music/3850571.Review__London_Sinfonietta__Sir_Jack_Lyons_Concert_Hall__University_of_York/</link>
      <description> Takemitsu’s And Then I Knew ’Twas Wind opens with floating, whispy fragments from a harp introduction, inviting the flute and viola to join in which, of course, they did beautifully. There were,
  obviously, references to the Debussy Sonata, but the rich tapestry of colour combination was highly authentic, the playing superb. Emily Hall’s ‘Join’ was dominated by sustained flute notes, gently
  at odds with lilting, pulsating harp ostinatos. To be sure, this was an attractive, disciplined work, marvellously played by Karen Jones (flute) and Helen Tunstall (harp), but I felt somewhat
  short-changed. A kind of surreal harmonic dislocation ran through the theme and variations of Britten’s majestic Lachrymae, that and the beautiful echoes of John Dowland, which sublimely flower
  into song for the closing coda. An effortless intimacy between the performers, Paul Silverthorne (viola) and John Constable (piano), made this performance very special indeed. Although Birtwistle’s
  Crowd was a typically percussive and uncompromising score, there were gentle ostinato patterns and a more accessible modal sound than we usually associate with the great man. Helen Tunstall gave an
  exhilarating performance of this original score, brimming with quirky invention. Messiaen’s Le Merle Noir (The Blackbird) had an almost perverse contrast between the neurotic, technically demanding
  acrobatics sections and those with lovely, sexy lyricism. The piece was written for an exam, and I am sure flautist Karen Jones would have passed with flying colours. The performance of Debussy’s
  Sonata For Flute, Viola And Harp was simply exceptional.
